Salford is leading the way in Greater Manchester in its drive for an inclusive digital offer for all of its citizens. Programmes such as Digital You and Salford Digital Eagles are breaking new ground in empowering individuals and providing necessary digital skills. With this inclusive and comprehensive vision in mind, we see infrastructure as a basic utility fundamental to maintaining and growing the economy and reducing the digital divide. Also, integrated digital connectivity underpins Salford’s ability to attract and retain business and inward investment.
Salford was the first location in the UK with a commercially enabled 5G network covering its Quays area and centred upon MediaCityUK. In addition we have created a successful tech hub The Landing at MediaCityUK as an Innovation Centre for 5G and smart city use-cases. The next generation of mobile connectivity is now emerging and we are determined to ensure that the City of Salford is best placed to exploit its advantages for enhanced functionality and associated inclusive economic benefits.
Consequently, it is vital must that we have the right infrastructure across every area of our city to be ready to support service on 5G handsets and deliver 5G use cases and associated business. Salford has already the fastest growing economy in Greater Manchester and further opportunities are on the horizon. Significantly, Salford possesses a number of development opportunities and existing economic activities which provide a geographic focus and a physical link between the University Campus and Salford Royal to the north and MediaCityUK to the south. These include the Salford Crescent Masterplan area and the future opportunity areas North of Broadway/Eccles New Road and Liverpool St industrial areas. This Salford Innovation Triangle provides a major opportunity to accommodate new investment and activity and to act as a key focus for the development of innovation and digital activity – and hence for growth across the Greater Manchester economy. Therefore time is now of the essence to ensure Salford’s digital infrastructure makes Salford an attractive and competitive place to innovate, invest and live in.
Our ambition is for the high-speed digital connectivity and services to cover all of the Salford City Council authority area, and be accessible to all citizens, visitors and businesses
