Salford has significant strengths in its digital economy particularly the growing digital sector and the cluster of businesses and activities centering upon MediaCityUK. However, the city has other prominent innovation leads especially in the field of Digital Health Care and medicine at Salford Royal Foundation Trust, and industrial applied research at the University of Salford.
The interplay between MediaCityUK/The Quays, Salford Royal Foundation Trust and the University of Salford, creates a wider innovation context – the Salford Innovation Triangle – within which a new agile approach to innovation is emerging and through which a national smart city/connected city exemplar centre will be developed.
Taken together, the three ‘nodes’ of the Salford Innovation Triangle – MediaCityUK, University of Salford and SRFT – provide an internationally significant enterprise cluster to enable the City Region to achieve its growth ambition.
Greater Manchester is a focal point for high growth digital companies, especially in ecommerce and digital marketing platforms. These companies and others in Fintech, VR and especially Cyber Security and AI are helping to drive further investment and talent growth in the region. In addition, Greater Manchester has one of the country’s most extensive and dynamic network of incubators, accelerators and co-working spaces, establishing the City Region as a Tech Destination, attracting new companies and promoting collaboration and disruptive thinking. GM also has the highest volume of data centres outside of London.
The emerging Tech landscape across Greater Manchester includes the super cluster of MediaCityUK Salford and the emerging potential of the Salford Innovation Triangle as a key component of the narrative which is underpinned by a culture of collaboration, support and sharing.
The Landing is an essential driver behind Salford’s digital enterprise activity - a unique co-working and proto-typing space that sits at the heart of the Salford Quays cluster. It offers digital SMEs and micro-businesses a flexible place to work alongside large technology organisations, allowing them to be part of, and benefit from, the rapidly growing business community at MediaCityUK. The Landing has augmented the place-making initiatives around the Quays, bringing in new cultural and environmental stakeholders who have helped to create a self-sustaining momentum within the Quays cluster.
Importantly, The Landing and MediaCityUK are very much the “engine room” for Connected City innovation - a dynamic centre for IoT and Connected Cities applications and deployment, workshops, thought-leadership, ventures investment and new products and service design. Our Digital Strategy plan includes:
- Shaping new SME IP and propositions for Connected Cities and Connected Citizens
- An MVP environment involving co-creation and investment analysis
- A demonstrator of the methodologies of smart city management for civic leaders (application level, retail level, network level, centre for regulation)
- A command-and-control centre for virtualized data management for connected cities
- A centre for asset management modeling and transformation in service design for urban management
To make Salford the most attractive city for digital enterprise and to establish Salford as a leading digital economy AND in doing so, to ensure that innovation and growth is directly connected to outcomes for Salford people. Our vision
